Following a major disaster like an earthquake, tornado or terrorism attack, local first responders, who provide fire and medical services, may not be able to meet the demand for these services.

In the event of a tornado, terrorism attack, earthquake, or whatever, the Hazelwood Fire Department would not have the manpower to manage the crisis without additional support.

Deputy Fire Marshal Dale Harbison will be training Hazelwood residents to become a C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) member to be prepared to cope with road closures, blockages and a host communication failures. Volunteers certified in the CERT program would help Hazelwood residents prepare, respond and cope through a natural disaster or community emergency.

Certification of the CERT program involves a course of study (20 hours of classroom and practical training) outlined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The course starts Feb 25, followed by other dates. Additional details, here:

Halloween Safety Tips

From auto collisions, falls, to burns, accidents are notoriously common for Halloween. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises a number of safety tips to keep children and kids safe:
  • Chaperoned trick or treating. For safety reasons, children under the age of 14 should be chaperoned to trick or treat.
  • There’s safety in numbers. Older adolescents should always travel in groups.
  • Steer clear of disaster. Cross in the middle of intersections has been a common fatality. Always cross the street at corners and designated crosswalks.
  • Wear smart Halloween costumes. Halloween attire that shields visibility tends to be the culprit behind many road side fatalities. Consider Halloween costumes with good visibility. Costumes should also be flame resistant.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also recommends adorning trick or treat bags with reflective tape and arming the kids with flashlights.
